Mauritius is home to some of the most beautiful beaches on this planet. The whole island is surrounded by pristine stretches of sand and beautiful coastline – deciding between the many different beaches can be hard.
But it needn’t be! Here’s a curated list of the 5 best beaches on the island – best explored during a road trip across the island.
The best part: In Mauritius, ALL beaches are publicly accessible. Don’t worry about the luxurious resorts that are situated right at the waterfront. There are NO private beaches in Mauritius, and you can rest, swim, and sunbath wherever you feel like!
Most Beautiful Beaches in Mauritius
1. Mont Choisy
Mont Choisy is a small beach town at the northwestern tip of the island. Here, the calm water of the Indian Ocean and the indigenous flora (no palm trees!) create a laid-back and authentic atmosphere. On the weekends, Mont Choisy is a local‘s favorite for family and friends gatherings, which entails music, dancing, and a very special vibe.
Plus, nowhere it seems like the island‘s food truck culture is more present than in Mont Choisy. It doesn’t matter if you crave fresh fruit juice, fried noodles, seafood or a delicious Kebap – you’ll find it here. Prices for a lunch by the sea start at 150 MUR (3.5 €) – so treat yourself to various delicacies.
2. Trou aux Biches
Just south of Mont Choisy lies another stunning beach – yet with a very different feel: Trou aux Biches, which impresses travelers with its sheer size and a comfortable infrastructure. For a couple miles, sunbathers get to marvel at a pristine white stretch of beach, along with crystal-clear waters and an alley of palm trees. Get ready to make that perfect postcard shot!
Though the luxurious Beachcomber Resort & Spa sits right at the beach (should I ever return to Mauritius, this would be one of my favorite picks!), feel free to walk along the entire waterfront and relax wherever you feel like. Trou aux Biches further boasts (clean) public restrooms and showers plus a few shops and food trucks. The sunset views are particularly stunning here.
3. Le Morne Beach
Le Morne Beach is likely the most scenic beach in Mauritius. Only here, Le Morne Brabant provides for an impressive backdrop. Should you ever get tired of relaxing at the beach (hear me out!), you can climb up that distinct rock for even more impressive views. In any case, relaxing at the pristine beach of Le Morne peninsula before or after the climb is essential.
4. Flic en Flac
Flic en Flac is located in the South-West, just north of Tamarin. Running along the shores for a few miles, that pristine beach is a remarkable piece of tropical nature. The adjacent town caters to all types of travelers and has a good infrastructure for shopping and dining. I know, the 5* resorts at the waterfront can be a bit intimidating. But that shouldn’t stop you from proudly placing your beach towel on the white sand.
5. Ile aux Cerfs
Ile aux Cerfs is accessible by a short boat ride from the harbor in Trou d’Eau Douce, a small town on the East Coast. Local tour operators can organize the transfer on the spot for about 600 MUR (12-15 €) for the return-trip.
Ile aux Cerfs comprises turquoise lagoons and white sandy bays, juxtaposed with mangrove trees and coral reefs. If you feel like parasailing, snorkeling or enjoying a typical Mauritian lunch, you will find it here. The real treat however is the island’s natural beauty. Wander around and find yourself a deserted stretch of beach.
